Monroe and Greene counties receive $55,308 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program Phase 38 funding
January 2021 - The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) has announced that Phase 38 has awarded $44,874 to Monroe County and $10,434 to Greene County to assist those in the community experiencing hunger and homelessness.
Funds will be distributed to agencies in each county that provide services through food programs, shelters, and rent, mortgage, and utility assistance programs.
To receive funding, organizations that apply must
- be private voluntary non-profits or units of government,
- have an accounting system,
- practice nondiscrimination,
- have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs,
- have a voluntary board of directors if a private non-profit organization, and
- be eligible to receive federal funds.
Applications must be received by noon on Wednesday, January 20 to the United Way office at 431 S College Ave., Bloomington, IN 47403. Applications can be found at the links below.
Monroe County’s EFSP Phase 36 funding was granted to 11 local agencies and provided 14,318 meals or food boxes and 1,252 nights of shelter, and assisted 23 households with rent, mortgage, and/or utility bills. Phase 37 is underway, as well as an additional CARES phase.
These federal funds were appropriated by Congress and are made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and administered in Monroe and Greene counties by United Way of Monroe County.
Per federal guidelines, a Local Board made up of representatives from the City of Bloomington, United Way of Monroe County, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, the Bloomington Jewish Community, Catholic Charities, IU Health Bloomington, South Central Community Action Program, the Monroe County Commissioners, and the Greene County Foundation will determine how funds awarded to Monroe County and Greene County will be distributed among local emergency food and shelter programs.
