Recently, Representative Trey Hollingsworth got to see the Free Community Tax Service first-hand when he met with United Way Executive Director, Efrat Feferman, and Monroe County Public Library Director, Marilyn Wood, at the site hosted in the main library.
“Thank you,” said Representative Hollingsworth in a statement after the meeting, “to all of the volunteers who help almost 3,000 families with their taxes each year.” This IRS-funded volunteer-powered program last year brought back more than $2.9 million in refunds and tax credits to community members.
The library is one of eleven locations in Monroe, Owen, and Brown county where volunteers help low- to moderate-income individuals file their taxes for free and get their maximum refund. While most of the sites are directly funded by the IRS grant United Way applies for each year, the library is one of two sites in our community supported by the AARP Foundation and AARP volunteers who prioritize filers over 60 years of age. We appreciated the opportunity to provide Representative Hollingsworth with a personal tour of this program in action, where volunteers and community partners come together to help friends and neighbors.
Thanks to Representative Hollingsworth for taking the time to visit and learn more about the Free Community Tax Service.
