Possibilities. For Legene White, it’s the possibility that if many people join together and give, even in a small way, our community will greatly benefit. Great power lies in numbers and Legene believes this is an integral part of Living United. “One solitary individual may only have a small impact - but when lots of people unite around a common cause, it becomes very powerful.”
As Director of the Cox Research Scholars Program at the Indiana University Hutton Honors College and as a Team Captain for the United Way campus campaign, she has the opportunity to bring together IU staff to make a positive impact in the community.
During United Way campaign meetings, Legene has learned a great deal about the community -- both the needs and the programs in place to help people. “There are many, many layers of local needs and most of us have no concept of those needs.” She believes the annual United Way fundraising campaign is a great opportunity for IU staff to rally together and improve our community.
Having met several member agency directors, Legene is moved by their incredible skills, great ideas, and passion. “These are people who could be leading large corporations yet they give heart and soul to help those in need.” Inspired by the dedication of these leaders, Legene finds it easy to enthusiastically support United Way and energize others to give to the annual campaign.
Legene has also learned how the United Way “umbrella” creates efficiencies. “United Way member agencies embrace the Live United spirit by working collaboratively and sharing resources so that together an even greater impact can be made.”
Passionate about education, Legene loves working with students of all ages. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools. When school is not in session, Legene and her family may be found riding roller coasters at her relatives’ amusement park in Pennsylvania.
