Monroe County residents increased their financial literacy during the annual Money Smart Week events held across Bloomington and Ellettsville during October. Adults of all ages learned about ways to keep expenses low, save money, and plan for the future.
“Money Smart Week afforded an exciting opportunity for our community to learn about key financial topics like slashing debt, managing credit, budgeting, and basic estate planning,” said Amy Leyenbeck, Community Initiatives Director at United Way.
A popular event focused on cooking healthy recipes on a budget.
“Shop and Cook Healthy Food on a Budget held at Banneker Community Center had a fantastic turnout,” said Leyenbeck. “The evening was full of smart shopping and cooking tips and delicious food! Eating healthfully and budgeting for financial well-being are both critically important to overall quality of life, and it was clear from this event that many people are concerned about these issues. We are grateful to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard for providing the instruction and Banneker Community Center for hosting us in their space.”
Earnings are one of the three key building blocks for a better life that United Way focuses. United Way and our member agencies focus on helping individuals and families get ahead and stay ahead by becoming more financially stable.
“Along with the Free Community Tax Service and many other Financial Stability Alliance Initiatives, Money Smart Week helps people learn how to meet their financial needs today, and continue working toward long-term financial goals in the future,” said Leyenbeck.
Money Smart Week was presented by the Financial Stability Alliance of South Central Indiana and United Way.
