“The best thing about the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is seeing people’s generosity each year,” said Matt Hovious, postal worker, NALC Branch 828 member, and Stamp Out Hunger volunteer. “It really sticks with me!”
Join Matt this Saturday, May 12th to help Stamp Out Hunger by placing a grocery bag (or more) filled with non-perishable food in non-breakable containers by your mailbox. The event is rain or shine!
These donations are critical to local food banks as they often experience a dip in contributions over the summer months. As schools let out for the summer, the need for additional food is greater since young students don't have access to free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs.
Matt has been volunteering with the Stamp Out Hunger food drive for eleven years. Every year he has a chance to see the community rise to help their neighbors.
“My first year picking up food was during the recession. I wasn’t expecting to pick up much, but at the end of my shift my truck was half full of goods,” Matt remembered. “I was really surprised.”
“A lot of mail carriers pick up food even if they’re off that day. I bring my family with me to help out,” said Matt. “We always have a really great turnout of volunteers.”
Be sure to leave a bag or more of donations for this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 12th. To learn more visit StampOutHungerSCI.org.
