The United Way Common Good Award, one of United Way's greatest international honors, highlights coalitions that strengthen communities through innovative practices impacting education, income, and health.
This year, United Way of Monroe County was named as one of ten worldwide finalists for our work with the Free Community Tax Service. During the awards ceremony on April 18, our United Way was recognized as "One to Watch" because of our success at bringing together a group of cross-sector leaders to address financial stability, one of our community’s largest challenges.
The Financial Stability Alliance (FSA) is a collaboration of private and public entities that came together to address issues that keep people from becoming and staying financially stable. FSA members realized that 25% of eligible residents were not filing their federal Earned Income Tax Credit, a credit for low-income workers that is considered the nation's largest anti-poverty program.
With a per capita income of $30,042, over 24% of the Monroe County population lives below the federal poverty line. Research shows that free tax services and financial education can make a measurable impact towards alleviating these economic strains. The Free Community Tax Service (FCTS) was formed to help local residents prepare and file their tax returns at no cost. FCTS also helps people claim all eligible federal and state tax credits.
