Earlier this year, Marsha Keith and Gene Snipes, long-time, loyal United Way supporters, generously provided the founding gift for the new Opportunity Fund.
“We're pleased to be the founding contributors to the new Opportunity Fund at United Way. We were looking for a way to make a difference during these difficult months, and this seemed like the perfect way to help a lot of people. We hope others will follow and will support this fund knowing it goes straight to the people who need it most."
The Opportunity Fund, a direct-support grant option from United Way, provides a one-time grant to individuals and families who need help overcoming barriers brought about by the challenges of the pandemic and to increase their financial stability. Individuals must apply through organizations that are members of the Financial Stability Alliance, a collaboration led by United Way.
Requests for Opportunity Fund grants must be related to overcoming a barrier that will lead to greater financial stability for the recipients, and these funds are considered a “last resort” when no other options exist. Examples of Opportunity Fund requests include help with tuition, clothing needed for a new job, or financial management classes.
This seed money will create lasting impact in the community for families and individuals who are ready to take the next step and need a boost up to overcome a barrier. To contribute specifically to the Opportunity Fund, please contact sherrie (at) monroeunitedway.org or 812-334-8370 ext 13.
